How to get to Otavalo Market
Otavalo station and the Plaza de Ponchos, the most famous indigenous market.
Ecuador’s national Tren Ecuador railway service has been suspended since 2020. The tourist segment restarted in 2025 is Ibarra–Andrade Marín; the Freedom Train does not currently reach Otavalo. Get to the market by bus. Always confirm availability before travelling.
Get off at Otavalo station (Freedom Train (Tren de la Libertad)). From there, from Otavalo station or bus terminal, ~10 min on foot (or a ~5 min taxi) to the Plaza de Ponchos.

About the place
Otavalo is the home of Ecuador’s most famous indigenous craft market. Its station belongs to the historic Freedom Train (Ibarra–Salinas), of which only the Ibarra– Andrade Marín segment was restarted in 2025. The tourist heart is the Plaza de Ponchos, a market of Kichwa textiles, weavings and handicrafts that spreads out every day and peaks on Saturdays. As the train does not reach Otavalo, the usual way to arrive is by bus from Quito or Ibarra; the square is a few minutes from the terminal.
