About the place

Otavalo is the home of Ecuador’s most famous indigenous craft market. Its station belongs to the historic Freedom Train (Ibarra–Salinas), of which only the Ibarra– Andrade Marín segment was restarted in 2025. The tourist heart is the Plaza de Ponchos, a market of Kichwa textiles, weavings and handicrafts that spreads out every day and peaks on Saturdays. As the train does not reach Otavalo, the usual way to arrive is by bus from Quito or Ibarra; the square is a few minutes from the terminal.
