Ibarra station

The Ibarra station is the terminus of the Freedom Train, in the capital of Imbabura, at 2,225 m above sea level. Ibarra, known as the “white city” for its whitewashed houses, is a destination of great colonial charm. Since 2025 the municipal Ibarra–Andrade Marín section has been running, keeping the railway experience alive in the area.

The city is famous for its paila ice creams, its traditional sweets such as nogadas and blackberry arrope, and the nearby Yahuarcocha Lagoon, with its famous racetrack. Historically, the spectacular train towards Salinas also departed from Ibarra, descending to the warm Chota Valley.
