The Machachi station sits in the seat of the Mejía canton, in Pichincha, at 2,945 m above sea level. It is a stop on the Tren Crucero and the Train of the Volcanoes, and is considered the gateway to the Avenue of the Volcanoes and to Cotopaxi National Park. Machachi is famous for the culture of the chagra, the Andean horseman of the haciendas.

Each year El Chagra is celebrated, one of the most striking equestrian festivals in the country. The area is the birthplace of the renowned Güitig mineral waters and is surrounded by the Pasochoa, Rumiñahui and El Corazón volcanoes, with páramos and haciendas ideal for rural and adventure tourism.

Tren Crucero — Quito (Chimbacalle) ↔ Durán (Guayaquil) · service suspended. Days: Scheduled departures (high season), in both directions.

Train of the Volcanoes — Quito (Chimbacalle) ↔ El Boliche · service suspended. Days: Historically weekends and public holidays.

Interchange station. Several railway routes met here (Tren Crucero, Train of the Volcanoes), making it an important point on the network.

Machachi was a stop on the Tren Crucero Quito–Durán and on the Train of the Volcanoes towards El Boliche.
The El Chagra festival, the Güitig waters and the El Corazón, Rumiñahui and Pasochoa volcanoes. It is an ideal base for visiting Cotopaxi National Park.
It is about 35 km south of Quito along the Pan-American Highway. Buses leave every few minutes from the Quitumbe Terminal.
